Dr. JB Wilson

Dr JB Wilson is a renowned Ghanaian Gynecologist. He had his training at the University College in Ibadan and specialist postgraduate training at the Queen Mothers’ Hospital, University of Glasgow, in the early 1970s.

He lectured at the the Korle Bu Medical School in 1974 and retired in 2000 but remains on Contract.  He also taught in the Nursing and Midwifery Schools at Korle Bu between 1975 and 1995. He was Head of Obstetrics/Gynecology Department from 1986 – 1996 and Vice-Dean of the Medical School from 1987 – 1989.

His major contributions to medical practice among others, have been the establishment of a Postgraduate Program which has trained more than 100 Gynaecologists, leading a team to research and undertake projects in prevention of Maternal Mortality from 1988 to date, as well as being part of the working group at the Dept. of Health NCS that planned and introduced National Family Planning into Ghana.

He has been appointed External Examiner at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Ghana, and SMS University (Liberia, Sierra Leone and Ilorn, Nigeria), Ghana Medical & Dental Council, Nurses & Midwifery Council, Ghana College of Physicians & Surgeons, American College of O&G, Royal College of O&G, and UK and West Africa College of Surgeons from 1981 to date.

Dr. Wilson has also been a Member of the Medical Ethics Commission of the NCS since 1979, and was Advisor to the Department of Health from 1986 – 2000. He has also served on the National Catholic Health Council since 1986. Dr. Wilson was instrumental in the planning and establishment of the Fistula Hospital at Mankessim and is today, the Acting Medical Director and Chair of the Hospital Board.
